Obviously I'm very happy that it now appears to be working, but I'm still a little concerned that there may be some issue lurking beneath the surface.

Now, with the IcyBox connected to my Windows 10 desktop via the new (short) USB cable, it seems to be fine and I can restart the machine (causing all drives to spin down and then up again) and the device starts and all drives are online. Reversing the process, it started fine with the 3 drives, so I then docked the 4th drive (naughty, I know) while it was powered on and that drive spun up OK and came online too! So I then tested the startup with just the undocked drive in place (and the other 3 undocked) and that worked fine. But I subsequently undocked one of the drives and tried again and then the device started OK. When I initially tried it with a Windows 8.1 laptop, at first I had the same error and noticed as the drives were starting up that when the 4th drive (not sure which one) spun up that appeared to cause a problem, causing all the drives to spin down before the device was initialised (leading to the "Unable to start" error in Device Manager as before). OK, so I obtained a new USB cable (0.5m instead of the 1.5m I was using before) and - at the moment! - the device and all installed drives appear to be working OK.
